We are working on trying to find more opportunities. If you know of any please feel free to contact ChiTown_Huck. You can click on the names of the projects to go their websites and see what they are about. Please note that some of these opportunities require a minimum number of volunteers in a group and are not open to individuals, so if you would like to participate, you will need to sign up with us rather than contacting the agencies directly. Sign up to volunteer through the website.  Use the links on the left to register with FestAid and log in.  Then go to MyAccount and click on Volunteer Opportunities. All of these projects require that you have transportation to the sites where you will be volunteering. We will try to set up car pooling, assuming that it is possible, once we have everyone signed up. Also, all of these opportunities will require you to bring you own lunch, snacks, and drinks, unless otherwise noted. If you would like to bring down or donate items, click on the Food & Item Donations link in the upper left hand corner to see a list of specific items that would be appreciated by the various aid organizations. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead Second Harvest of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana (May 1st through May 3rd) Dates: Tuesday, May 1st through Thursday, May 3rd Work Details: Working in the warehouse sorting and repackaging food, personal items, and school supplies for distribution to families and other aid organizations. You can volunteer for one or two shifts in a given day. Hours: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Requirements: Need a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 25 people . Need to wear closed toe shoes. Habitat for Humanity, Musician’s Village (April 30th through May 3rd) Dates: Monday, April 30th through Thursday, May 3rd Work Details: Building homes in the Upper Ninth Ward. Hours: 7:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Requirements: A maximum of 40 people can sign up on a given day. We need to register as a group, which we will handle for the group once everyone signs up. Habitat for Humanity, St. Bernard Recovery Project Dates: Monday through Friday weekly Work Details: The St. Bernard Recovery Project is focusing on rebuilding St. Bernard Parish by rebuilding homes, civic centers, schools, and interacting with the community. You must volunteer for a minimum of two days with the first day consisting of 2-3 hours of training and possible work. Hours: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Requirements: Volunteers should bring several pairs of work clothes, depending on the number of days you anticipate working, eye goggles, steel-toed boots with steel shanks, N95 respirators, and non-porous gloves. Tetanus vaccination is important to have. Please consult the St. Bernard Recovery Project website to make sure that you understand the scope and requirements for this work. Animal Rescue New Orleans (April 30th thru May 3rd) Dates: Monday, April 30th through Thursday, May 3rd Work Details: Primary need is for people to drive to “feeding stations” that have been set up all over town for abandoned animals. Very detailed maps will be provided for volunteers. Many out-of-towners have done this previously. Can also be paired with a resident if it is your preference. Secondary need is for “humane trappers”, if you have experience in this area. You do not need a car to volunteer, but let us know if you do so rides can be coordinated. Hours: Varies Requirements: Volunteers must complete 1 hour orientation. Signup: Signup directly with ARNO. Arabi Wrecking Krewe Work Details: Arabi Wrecking Krewe is no longer cleaning and gutting homes. They still need assistance in fundraising, community volunteering, increasing public awareness for the work they are doing and the work that needs to be done, and are looking for licensed, bonded, and insured contractors that can do rebuilding work. Signing up with them will redirect you to their volunteer signup page, and after that you can work directly with them. Katrina Krewe Work Details: Katrina Krewe is no longer picking up trash along New Orleans roads. If you click to signup with them, you will be redirected to the volunteer page on their website, which has many organizations through which you can volunteer. Donations: Katrina Krewe has run a very successful "Kids Against Trash", anti-litter program in in over 42 New Orleans area schools since August of 2006. To date they have targeted over 6200 children. The program will be wrapping up for this school year in late April, 2007. Katrina Krewe is currently seeking your financial support to help raise $20k to continue this program into the next school year, thus allowing us to present it to the many children who have yet to see it. Lakeview Civic Improvement Association Work Details: LCIA is presently replanting many of the neutral grounds on Canal Blvd. They have funding for the materials and equipment but are in need of volunteer groups to assist in the planting and reconditioning of the areas. The project called Operation Sudden Impact is approximately 50% complete with the assistance of 12 cadets from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and support from Shell.  LCIA is hoping to finish the current project in the April/May time period this year.
